Jobs for Dependent Visa Holders in Japan

The Dependent status is for the spouses and children of people living in Japan on work statuses such as Engineer/Specialist, or as students. Many Dependent visa holders want to work, and part-time roles that fit around school runs and family life are widely available: daytime shifts at restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores, food factory and packing work, cleaning, warehouse jobs, care facility support, and for those with language skills, tutoring or translation help.

To work, you need permission to engage in activities outside your status, and the general limit is 28 hours per week across all jobs. Work at adult entertainment businesses is not allowed. Working full-time requires changing to a status that permits it, for example Engineer/Specialist if you have a relevant degree and a matching job offer, or Specified Skilled Worker after passing the relevant tests. Children who grew up and studied in Japan may have other options. Your status also depends on the main holder's status, so check the rules if their situation changes.
