Tokyo has the largest concentration of employers in Japan with experience hiring foreign staff, so it is often the first place people look for visa support. IT and engineering companies, trading firms, language schools and international hotels regularly support Engineer/Specialist applications, while restaurant groups, hotels, care providers and building-cleaning companies hire through the Specified Skilled Worker route in their fields. Some employers recruit directly from overseas; others mainly support students and residents already in Japan.

Visa support means the employer prepares its side of the paperwork: documents for a Certificate of Eligibility if you are abroad, or for a change of status if you are already in Japan. It does not guarantee the result. Whether your background and the job fit a status, and the final decision, rest with the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. Applications in the Tokyo area are handled by a busy regional bureau, so allow enough time between an offer and your intended start date.

A practical tip: ask how many foreign employees the company has sponsored before, whether it works with an administrative scrivener, who pays the fees and what happens to the offer if the application is not approved. For SSW roles, the cost of required support must not be charged to you. Be cautious with agents who promise approval or ask for large upfront payments.
