IT Jobs for Engineer/Specialist Visa Holders in Japan
IT is the most straightforward industry for the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status. Software development, infrastructure and network engineering, cloud operations, QA engineering, data work and IT project management are typical roles in the ‘engineer’ side of the status. Immigration looks for a link between your education or experience and the job: generally a degree or Japanese vocational diploma in a related subject, or around ten years of practical experience. Certain IT qualifications recognised by the Ministry of Justice can also serve instead of a degree.
Many IT listings in Japan are for companies that place engineers at client sites, often called SES or client-site work. This can fit the status as long as the work is genuinely engineering and your employer is stable and pays you directly. What does not fit is a title like ‘IT support’ that is mostly boxing equipment or general labour. Japanese requirements vary widely: some teams work in English, but most client-facing roles expect business Japanese, and N2 or above widens your options considerably.
A practical tip: if you change jobs, you must notify the Immigration Services Agency within 14 days. You can also apply for a certificate of authorised employment for the new job, which gives you some reassurance before your next renewal that the new role fits your status.
