Sales Jobs for Engineer/Specialist Visa Holders in Japan

Sales roles can fit the Engineer/Specialist status when the work draws on business, marketing or economics knowledge, or on your language and cultural background. Typical examples are corporate (B2B) sales, overseas sales and export development, marketing and market research, account management for foreign clients, and sales roles targeting customers from your home country. Immigration looks for a link between your studies or experience and the job, as with other roles under this status.

The line to watch is between specialised sales and simple selling. Working mainly as shop staff, at a till, stocking shelves or handing out flyers is generally not accepted as the main duty, even when the job title says ‘sales’. Retail roles that combine store management, buying or large amounts of foreign-language customer service are judged case by case, so ask the employer how they describe the work. Pay also matters: the status requires pay at least equal to a Japanese employee in a similar role, so commission-only or highly unstable pay can be a problem.

A practical tip: ask what you will sell, to whom, and how targets and bonuses work. Sales in Japan relies heavily on relationships and polite business Japanese, so N2 or above is common for domestic sales, while overseas sales may value your native language more. Keep a record of your main clients and markets; it shows the specialised nature of your work at renewal. When changing jobs, notify the Immigration Services Agency within 14 days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a shop sales assistant on the Engineer/Specialist visa?

Generally not as the main duty. Shop-floor selling, cashier work and stocking are not considered specialised work. Roles with a large share of management, buying or foreign-language work are judged individually by the Immigration Services Agency.

Is commission-only pay OK on this visa?

It can cause problems. Your pay must be at least equal to a Japanese employee doing similar work, so a stable base salary is expected. Check the contract carefully.

Which sales roles suit foreign candidates best?

Overseas sales, export development and roles serving clients from your home country use your language and market knowledge directly, and often fit the international services side of the status well.
