Hotel and ryokan work falls under the SSW accommodation field. It covers the main guest-facing work of a lodging business: front desk, planning and publicity, concierge services and restaurant service within the property. Unlike the Engineer/Specialist status, SSW accommodation lets you do hands-on hospitality work, including a mix of front and service tasks. For SSW (i) you generally need to pass the accommodation skills test and either the JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 or higher.

A few conditions shape which listings fit. The property must hold a hotel or ryokan business licence, and businesses regulated under adult entertainment laws cannot employ SSW workers. Employment must be direct. Tasks such as room cleaning or bed-making that a Japanese colleague would also do alongside their main work are generally acceptable as related duties, but a job that is only cleaning does not fit this field. SSW (ii) in accommodation is available for experienced workers in a supervisory role who pass the higher-level test.

A practical tip: resort hotels and ryokan in tourist areas often provide staff dormitories and meals, which helps if you are moving from abroad, but they may be far from cities and busy on holidays. City business hotels usually offer more regular shifts. Ask which duties make up most of the day, since that matters both for your skills growth and for your status. A change of employer needs a new change-of-status permission first.
