Specified Skilled Worker Food Factory Jobs in Japan

Food factory work falls under the SSW field of food and beverage manufacturing. It covers making, processing and packing food and drinks, such as boxed meals, bread and confectionery, prepared side dishes, noodles, processed meat and seafood, and beverages. To qualify for SSW (i) you generally need to pass the food and beverage manufacturing skills test and either the JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 or higher. Completing related Technical Intern Training may exempt you from the tests.

Two points matter when reading these listings. First, the employer must be a food or beverage manufacturer and must hire you directly; dispatch employment is not allowed in this field. Second, the work must be manufacturing. A shop that only sells food, or a restaurant kitchen, belongs to different rules, and a restaurant role would need the food service field instead. SSW (ii) exists in this field for experienced workers who take on a supervisory role and pass the higher-level test, which opens the way to longer stays and bringing family.

A practical tip: food plants often run early-morning or overnight shifts so that products reach shops on time, and some areas are refrigerated. Ask about shift patterns, temperature in the work area and how hygiene checks are done. If you want to reach SSW (ii) later, ask whether the company can give you line-leader experience, since supervisory experience is part of the requirement.
