Restaurant work falls under the SSW food service field. It covers the whole operation of a restaurant: cooking and food preparation, serving customers, and store management tasks such as ordering stock and training staff. This makes it one of the more flexible SSW fields, because you are not limited to the kitchen or to the floor. For SSW (i) you generally need to pass the food service skills test and either the JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 or higher.

There are clear limits. You must be employed directly by the restaurant operator, not through dispatch. Businesses regulated as adult entertainment, such as venues where staff sit with and entertain customers, cannot employ SSW workers, and neither can such work be done at an otherwise normal venue. SSW (ii) in food service is available for people with experience supervising staff or running a store who pass the higher-level test, and it removes the cap on total stay and allows family to join you.

A practical tip: ask whether the role is fixed to one branch or whether transfers between branches are expected, and what the path to shift leader or deputy manager looks like, since that experience counts towards SSW (ii). Chain restaurants often have training manuals and structured promotion, while small independent restaurants may give broader experience sooner. Changing employer requires a new change-of-status permission before you start.
